Did You Know? – Carrying of the Bride

There are different reasons across different cultures why brides are carried across the threshold of their new home.

Some believe that when the brides were abducted, they were allowed to return home should their feet touch the ground before they were safely inside their new home.

In Roman times, brides were instructed to at least pretend to have hesitance in giving up their virginity by refusing to enter the bridal chamber unless carried.

In China, a bride would demonstrate her commitment to her new duties as a wife, by being carried over a pan of charcoal placed in the doorway of her new home.

In several areas of the world, a bride can only enter her new home through the main door and no other entrances, or it would be seen as a sign of bad luck. The same superstition applies also for a bride to fall before reaching the hearth of her new home.

These are some of the reasons why a bride is still carried over the threshold in some parts of the world today.
